Lions Clubs volunteers turned out in force this spring to clean up Easter Seals Camp Winfield in anticipation of its first overnight campers in two years.
June 25-26 will be the first weekend the facility in Lake Country welcomes kids and adults with disabilities for overnight stays since the start of the pandemic.
Lions Clubs members from across the Thompson-Okanagan joined in to get everything spick and span for the campers. They repaired fences, raked leaves and debris, cleaned the BBQ area, kitchen and windows, weeded flower beds and sorted craft supplies.
“Behind the scenes of every smiling camper face is a Lions Club working hard to help send kids to camp,” says James Gagnon, Easter Seals Director of Camp Programs and Facilities. “From fundraising to help keep costs low for campers, to physically volunteering to clean the camp grounds, we wouldn’t exist without our Lions Clubs.”
The first New Camper weekend on June 25-26 kicks off the season. It will be followed by four weeks of camp through the end of July.
Camp Winfield is a fully-accessible, nature-based overnight camp for anyone aged 6-49 with any disability, including developmental challenges, autism, down syndrome, anxiety disorders and cerebral palsy.
Lions Clubs who volunteered for the cleanup this year included: the Oliver Lions Club, Okanagan Falls Lions Club, Penticton Lions Club, Westbank Lions Club, Kelowna Okanagan Mission Lions Club, Kelowna Rutland Lions Club, Lake Country Lions Club, Vernon Lions Club – Vernon, BC Lumby Lions Club, Sicamous Lions Club, Aberdeen Lions Club, North Kamloops Lions Club, Kamloops Paddlewheelers Lions Club, Leavenworth Lions Club and the Extreme Makeover Team.
